Going Places is the ultimate pre-travel prep course, helping empower you when it comes to decision-making and safety awareness. Vagaband, through Going Places, will create in you a mentality of confidence, awareness and preparedness.
Developed and led by world-class experts on risk-reduction and safety, Going Places passes on the benefit of decades' experience in a single day. We’ve curated content that goes beyond basic advice: over this day long course you’ll engage and discuss everything from conservation to language and anthropology in order to guide the groups towards a deeper understanding of what it means to travel responsibly.
Once our facilitators have comprehensively covered the essential knowledge that every traveller should have, the day turns its focus to the stuff that makes travelling truly extraordinary. We address travel as a holistic entity, engaging with individuals one-to-one and discussing self-awareness alongside finding out their personal concerns and opening a dialogue which encourages them to ask for, and find, answers. We teach that respect for cultural mores and an understanding of personal behaviours are critical when it comes to risk reduction. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
In addition to this, we look at aspects of travel that perhaps don’t immediately strike one as part of pre-departure preparation. For example, we consider the importance of cultural sensitivity, and how to make travelling throughout the world as enriching, fulfilling and immersive as possible, whilst also remaining safe.
This course is yet another way to spread our message of kind and considerate travel, promoting our ethos Hope for Sunshine, Prepare for Rain. We want you to leave your hometown feeling ready to face the world with confidence and consideration.
The course will be largely lead by accomplished expedition leaders and medics, carefully picked to ensure we are represented by the best facilitators we can get our hands on.
Our lead instructor is Kelsey Hoppe, a world-renowned expert in gap year safety (See her TED talk here). Furthermore, in addition to a professional facilitator, two young experienced travellers (Vagabandits), who have been professionally trained to co-facilitate the course, will be on-hand for every session.
The involvement of peer trainers is what sets this course apart from your standard safety lecture, they have been vetted and briefed to answer your questions with utmost honestly and compassion. In many cases the peer-trainers have learnt from their mistakes the hard way, essentially meaning you won't have to.
